Stephen Gosling

Pianist Stephen Gosling enjoys a varied career as soloist and chamber musician with a particular focus on the music of our time. He is currently a member of the New York New Music Ensemble, Ensemble Sospeso, Manhattan Sinfonietta, American Modern Ensemble, Washington Square Contemporary Music Society, and Ne(x)tworks. He is additionally a frequent guest artist of many other groups, including the New York Philharmonic, Orpheus, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, American Composers Orchestra, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Speculum Musicae, and Absolute Ensemble. His work has garnered consistent critical acclaim, and he was profiled by the New York Times in October
2005.

Mr.Gosling earned his Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees at the Juilliard School, during which time he was awarded the Mennin Prize for Outstanding Excellence and Leadership in Music and the Sony Elevated Standards Fellowship. He was also featured as concerto soloist an unprecedented four times, in works by Stravinsky, Schnittke, Schoenfield and Corigliano (the latter conducted by Leonard Slatkin).

Mr. Gosling has collaborated with a huge number of American composers, among them Adams, Babbitt, Carter, Reich, Reynolds, Wuorinen and Zorn, as well as several European ones, including Boulez, Ferneyhough, Knussen, Lachenmann, Ruders and Turnage. He has also worked extensively with New Zealand’s pre-eminent composer, John Psathas, recording two award-winning CDs of his work (Rhythm Spike and Fragments) and premiering his piano concerto Three Psalms with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

Recent highlights include solo performances at Merkin Hall, Symphony Space, and in Miller Theater’s Stravinsky festival; tours of Thailand and Belgium with New York New Music Ensemble; a program of Elliott Carter’s chamber music (with violinist Rolf Schulte and cellist Fred Sherry) at Zankel Hall to celebrate the composer’s centennial, performances of Berio’s Points on a Curve to find in New York and
Boston with Manhattan Sinfonietta and a tour and recording of newly commissioned works for clarinet / piano duo (with Jean Kopperud), collectively titled Rated X.

In ever-increasing demand both as soloist and chamber musician, Mr.Gosling has performed throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia, and made over 30 recordings to date.
